Abstract
A descriptive integrative review was conducted to explore the literature on the role of family caregivers in managing and administering medications to their relatives with chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD). Databases were searched using the MeSH and DeCS terms drug therapy, drug administration, medication adherence, role adoption, family caregiver, and chronic disease for publications between 2010 and 2020. As result, twenty-seven articles were selected and analyzed. Three main themes were identified: 1) response to caregiver’s role, 2) caregiver’s role organization and management, and 3) execution and performance of caregiver’s role in using medications. It is concluded that connecting learning resources, organizing their activities, and becoming skilled in responding to their family member’s pharmacological needs are strategies that evidence the adoption of the caregiver role in medication management.References
