Abstract

The relationship between archaeology and the nation is not obvious, the abundant literature on the topic notwithstanding; however, it is safe to state that both are modern inventions, somehow related. The past gave to the nation, the political entity that best exemplifies modern transcendence, the continuity it needed not to appear as a bold transgression of the sacredness it had just replaced. The courting of the past by the nation is not a contradiction neither an aporia but a constitutive tension of modernity. These notes pretend to sketch such a tension through the relationship between three actors: archaeology, the nation, and the past.
