Resumen

Introduction: Grip strength has been considered as a mechanism to predict the risk of suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases, risk of falls and early mortality. Objective: To analyze the factors associated with grip strength. Method: It was designed a cross-sectional with apparently healthy young adults; anthropometric variables, physical activity level, and grip strength were evaluated by manual dynamometry with a digital dynamometer. Results: Two-hundred sixty-eight people were included in the analysis; most proportion corresponds to the female sex, ages between 18 and 26 years, right-handed. A linear regression model explained 64.93% of the variability of handgrip strength based on the different variables included. Conclusions: Age, male sex, higher levels of physical activity, belonging to an ethnic group, greater arm circumference and greater upper limb length, are associated with higher levels of grip strength.
