Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
Determine the presence of Candida in the patients with subprosthesical stomatitis attended in clinics
of the Faculty of Dentistry of Cartagena University in August 2,006- June 2,007. METHOD: Cross descriptive study.
The population studied were the patients attended at the clinics of the Faculty of Dentistry of Cartagena University in
August 2,006- June 2,007 with subprosthesical stomatitis. The sample was conformed by 44 patients. Non probability by
criterion sampling. Variables evaluated: Presence of Candida, type of Candida, type of subprosthesical stomatitis, signs,
symptoms, age, gender, location of the wound, type of prosthesis, time of use, use of the prosthesis sleeping, number
of times that clean the prosthesis at the day, employed substances to clean it. It was carried out takes and prosecution
of the samples through exam in fresh with KOH Al 10%, coloring of Gram, Agar Saboraud more chloramphenicol and
the specific test API 20C AUX. RESULTS: Candida was isolated in a 23%, the species but remote was C. albicans (60%),
the type of stomatitis that most presented was the type 1 (52%), the 70% of the sample utilized the prosthesis sleeping.
CONCLUSIONS:
Candida was isolated in a low percentage, corroborating that these species are not the etiologic agents
in all the cases.
