Resumen

El problema del sobrepeso y la obesidad, subvalorados en el pasado, representan en la actualidad una preocupante epidemia en Salud Pública en el mundo elevando el riesgo de padecer Enfermedades Crónicas No Transmisibles (ECNT) y produciendo discapacidades físicas y problemas psicológicos. Los niños y adolescentes no escapan del problema principalmente porque están inmersos en ambientes obesogénicos donde se exponen a una creciente oferta de alimentos procesados industrialmente de alto contenido calórico como las bebidas endulzadas, y por el aumento del sedentarismo. Tampoco están ingiriendo una adecuada cantidad de frutas y verduras ya que se reconoce que su consumo de 400 g al día puede prevenir la obesidad y las ECNT. Desde 2009 Colombia cuenta con un marco legal para enfrentar el problema del sobrepeso y obesidad infantiles y el bajo consumo de FV. Se conoce además que las escuelas son ambientes propicios para intervenciones potencialmente efectivas que aumenten el consumo de estos nutrientes porque ofrecen el acceso a grandes poblaciones de estudiantes y dan la oportunidad de institucionalizar programas de promoción de alimentación saludable. Se recomienda crear estrategias locales para que las escuelas sean incluidas en un plan preventivo de las ECNT. (DUAZARY 2012 No. 2, 151 - 158)
