Abstract

Anthracnose, associated with the phytopathogenic genus Colletotrichum, is one of the most harmful mango diseases in the world, causing field and postharvest damage. The pathogen is hemibiotrophic and an asymptomatic endophyte, and some species show quiescence; the role of these biological states as a source of inoculum is still uncertain. The pathogenicity of 14 Colletotrichum endophyte-quiescent isolates obtained from previous studies and one isolate from symptomatic mango fruit were evaluated. Initially, the isolates were described morphometrically (colony) from monosporic cultures and compared for growth rate, inoculum density, conidia, and appressoria, finding statistical differences for growth rate, inoculum density, and conidia size. The pathogenicity of the morphotypes on mango leaves and branches was evaluated with spray inoculations on two-year-old trees under dry tropical conditions; symptoms were described, and biological variables (number, diameter, and growth rate of lesions) were evaluated. In leaves, all morphotypes induced lesions but there were differences in growth rate; in branches, highly significant differences were found between morphotypes in the number and diameter of lesions and differences in lesion growth rate; however, there were morphotypes that did not induce lesions. Colletotrichum morphotypes have high morphological and biological variability, and endophytic isolates are potentially infective on mango leaves and branches.
